Chemistry Laboratory Instructor

The College of General Education provides a range of core courses common to all students of the University, in subject areas that support the academic structure of the undergraduate programs. Your Commitment 

Reporting to the Department Head, the ideal candidate should be a creative and innovative individual with a demonstrated commitment to excellence in effective teaching. The candidate will plan, develop, and deliver laboratory courses in chemistry, such as General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Health Sciences Chemistry, Biochemistry, as well as other science lab courses to support the institution's programs.

Education and Experience Requirements 

• Master’s Degree in Chemistry or Applied Chemistry, or a closely related field from a recognized institution,
• A minimum of three (3) years of prior full-time teaching experience within higher education institutions in an English-speaking institution, with a focus on instructing chemistry Laboratory courses.
• Strong knowledge of Chemistry principles and laboratory techniques.
• Demonstrate knowledge of laboratory health and safety practices, including chemical handling, storage, labeling, waste disposal, risk assessment, and emergency procedures.
• Demonstrate experience in the operating and safe use of laboratory equipment and instrumentation commonly used in chemistry teaching laboratory.

• Demonstrate reliability, responsibility, and flexibility in managing the teaching and learning environment. 
• Effective written and verbal communication skills in English; interpersonal skills that contribute to a healthy workplace environment.
• Collaborative and collegial spirit and a demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a team.
• Strong organizational and time management skills.
• Enthusiasm for teaching and helping students learn.
• Demonstrate ability to deliver hands-on, applied and experiential laboratory learning activities.

The expectations of the Chemistry Lab Instructor are as follows:

1. Prepare, set up, and test laboratory experiments before delivery, ensuring that equipment, chemicals, reagents, materials, and teaching and learning resources are available and ready for use.
2. Managing laboratory experiments and activities, ensuring students' safety and adherence to proper laboratory procedures.
3. Instructing students on experimental techniques, theory, and safety protocols and offering guidance on data collection and analysis.
4. Evaluating students' laboratory reports, assignments, and performance and providing feedback on their work.
5. Holding office hours to assist students with questions, concerns, and clarifications related to laboratory work and assignments.
6. Contribute to the development, review, and continuous improvement of laboratory curricula, experiments, manuals, assessment activities, and instructional materials based on student learning outcomes, and assessment results.
7. Ensuring the laboratory complies with safety regulations, conducting or supporting risk assessments for laboratory activities, and ensuring appropriate procedures for chemical handling, labeling, storage, emergency response, and waste disposal.
8. Maintaining a safe, clean, and organized laboratory environment and promoting responsible and sustainable use of chemicals, consumables, water, energy, and other laboratory resources
9. Overseeing equipment and instrumentation in the laboratory, ensuring proper maintenance, and coordinating repairs or replacements when necessary.
10. Handling administrative tasks such as record-keeping, inventory management, and scheduling laboratory sessions.
11. Collaborating with the team to prepare a comprehensive list of lab materials, equipment, and reagents required for practical labs.
12. Staying updated on the latest advancements in chemistry and teaching methodologies through ongoing professional development.
13. Contributing to UDST’s activities and initiatives, including assignments to committee work related to curriculum, assessment, student success, and community outreach.
14. Attending department meetings and training sessions as required.
15. Other tasks may be assigned by the Department Head.
