The College of Engineering and Technology invites applications for position of Chemical Lab Technician.

Responsibilities

Reporting to the Head of the Department, you will be responsible for the development, delivery and evaluation of a broad range of courses within Chemical Engineering program. You will evaluate student progress and manage the resources of the learning environment.  The successful candidate will liaise with industry and other educational institutions; participate in industry advisory committees and coordinate, manage and control projects within the specified program area.

Inventory Management: Maintain accurate records of inventory levels, including tracking stock levels, replenishing supplies, and conducting regular audits to prevent shortages or overstock situations.

Procurement Coordination: Collaborate with procurement teams to ensure timely acquisition of materials and equipment needed for academic and research activities. Assist in sourcing suppliers, obtaining quotes, and negotiating contracts to secure favorable terms.

Warehousing and Storage: Manage the organization and layout of storage facilities to optimize space utilization and accessibility. Implement appropriate storage methods and systems to safeguard inventory and facilitate efficient retrieval.

Logistics Planning: Develop and implement logistics plans and schedules to support the operational needs of various departments and projects. Anticipate demand fluctuations and plan accordingly to prevent disruptions in supply chains.

You will keep course portfolio documents required for program review and accreditation processes and engage in instructional development as well as new program development. Preparation and delivery of lessons to encourage student involvement in alignment with the Institution’s Academic Quality Framework and curriculum requirements and changing industry knowledge.  

 

Plan and organize instruction to maximize student subject matter acquisition and retention employing a variety of teaching and development strategies and making modifications to meet diverse student needs.

 

Safe delivery of laboratory projects to reinforce and apply theoretical principles and facilitate TVET practice-based learning.

Demonstrate to students and monitor student work in a laboratory setting closely related to a work situation to facilitate practice-based learning.

 

Assist in ensuring that laboratory equipment and materials are available and appropriately prepared for instructional delivery.

Maintain health and safety, best practices during laboratory or workshop activities and ensuring all equipment and materials are handled according to university policies and procedures to safeguard laboratory users against injury and in the event of an incident assist in the preparation of incident reports as per University requirements.

 

Assist in the maintenance of laboratory areas and equipment in an orderly, clean, efficient and safe manner in compliance with University Health and Safety policies and procedures.

 

Support the program curriculum committee with the maintenance of course portfolio documents required for accreditation processes.  

Attend faculty, staff, course and program meetings and participate in initiatives to monitor and enhance student learning development.

Support the faculty in marking students’ papers, exams in line with the guidance provided as well as assist with taking / monitoring class attendance.

Qualifications

Education and Experience Requirements

Faculty members will be placed in the appropriate rank based on their education and experience. The broad criteria are noted below.

 

For Teaching Assistant

•              A Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical Engineering or a closely related field is required; from a recognized, accredited institution.

Experience

  • Minimum of three (3) years full-time teaching experience in upper secondary, post-secondary, or higher education institution.
  • Demonstrated ability to use a variety of educational technology and platforms.
  •  Demonstrated academic and information literacy skills.

Other required skills

  • Commitment to applied and experiential learning as a pedagogy and a key feature of UDST’s mandate.
  •  Ability to design, develop, deliver, and evaluate authentic learning experiences and assessments incorporating contemporary tools and resources to maximize content learning in context and to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes identified in program outcomes.
  • Digital literacy and demonstrated fluency in technology systems, and an ability to model and facilitate use of current and emerging digital tools to support research and learning.
  •  Demonstrated ability to develop technology-enriched learning environments that enable students to be active participants in their own learning.
  • Commitment to the effectiveness, vitality, and self-renewal of the teaching profession through self-driven continuous professional development and life-long learning.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Collaborative and collegial spirit and a demonstrated ability to establish rapport with learners, colleagues, sponsor-employers, and members of the community.
  • Experience in leadership and innovation in technology-based projects.
